Betting Tips

Welcome to the races!!

Here is a small guide to help you become familiar with betting at the harness races. Pari-mutuel wagering means "betting among ourselves". Betting on a horse is similar to a stock transaction, when you buy a betting ticket, you are buying a share in the horse's performance in the race. You are essentially wagering against other bettors, and the race track is like a broker for the transaction.

Types of Wagers

WIN - collect, your horse must finish in 1st place.

PLACE - to collect, your horse must finish in 1st or 2nd.

SHOW - to collect, your horse must finish in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.

EXACTA - to collect, you must pick two horses that will finish in 1st and 2nd in exact order.

EXACTA BOX- same as an exacta, but your two horses can finish in 1st and 2nd in any order.

TRIFECTA - to collect, you must pick three horses that will finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place but in exact order.

TRIFECTA BOX - same as a trifecta but your three horses must finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in any order.

SUPERFECTA - to collect, you must pick four horses that will finish in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place but in an exact order.

SUPERFECTA BOX - same as superfecta but your four horses must finish in 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th place butin any order.

**Boxing your bets costs more, but you will have a better chance to win.

DAILY DOUBLE - to collect, you must pick the winners of two consecutive races. The wager must be made before the start of the first daily double race.

PICK 3 - to collect, you must pick the winners of three consecutive races. The wager must be made before the start of the first pick 3 race.

PICK 6 - to collect, you must pick the winners of six consecutive races. The wager must be made before the start of the first pick 6 race.

Placing The Bet

Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to make your wagers before the start of a race. You can either use the self-service wagering machines or visit a mutual clerk in an open window to place your bet.

Self-Service Wagering

1. Purchase a voucher from a voucher machine or from a mutuel clerk.
2. Insert voucher into a self-service machine with the arrows down and the print facing you.
3. The machine will guide you through your bets step by step. Make sure you check your ticket for accuracy such as the race number and correct race track. Should you need assistance, there is usually an attendant near the machines to help you.

**Never leave the window if you experience a problem with the machine. Always make sure you grabbed both your bet tickets AND your voucher after you have made your bets.**

Betting With The Mutuel Clerks

Please have cash ready for the clerk and know what you would like to bet before you get to the window.

You will tell the clerk five things:
1. What track
2. What race number
3. How much you wish to wager
4. Type of bet
5. The number(s) of the horse

For example, "Cal Expo, race 4, twenty dollars to win on horse number 5."Or, "Cal Expo, race 8, ten dollar exacta: 5,6."
